Pristina is it safe for a lone female

Hi, I%26#39;m thinking of visiting Pristina as a tourist.

I am a female and will be travelling alone. Will I be safe?

|||

Definitely yes!

There%26#39;s a rather important expat community in Pristina working for the UN and other agencies and there are plenty of lonely ladies living there and elsewhere in Kosovo without fearing anything at all.

Go to Pristina and enjoy it!

|||

Thanks

Looking for anyone who knows...

Looking for anybody that might know the family of Spiros/Pandora Tashko in Tirana? I have been dating their son Kostandin for 4 years and am hoping to visit Tirana this August. Kosta left the country a long time ago but thought it was worth a chance to see if anybody remembered him or his family and can give me a few hints as to where I might stay in Tirana while visiting?

Car hire, road conditions, environmental pollution

We will be travelling to Albania late June/early July this year. We have just booked a flight to Tirana and would prefer travelling with a rented car sticking mainly to the costal areas.

Having read the warnings about hazardous driving and bad road conditions in Albania we are wondering

-if it is possible for foreign tourists (at all) and

-where (close to the airport) to hire a car?

-are driving conditions really so bad that it is almost impossible for foreigners to drive? – Two years ago we stayed in the Ulcinj area in Montenegro close to the Albanian border, how much worse would you say are driving conditions in Albania?

In addition, we read about heavy environmental pollution throughout the country....

-are the beaches heavily polluted?

-is it possible to swim in the sea?

Thank you very much for your answers, it is highly appreciated!

|||

It%26#39;s not as tragic as that!

If you ever drove in Southern Italy, expect something of the kind... Chaotic driving and surprises but if you do not drive as in a German Highway you will be quite safe..

contact@albaniantrip.com and they could probably arrange the hole thing for the car and more...

The air is polluted in Tirana, in certain parts of the town specially but the rest of the country is quite ok... There%26#39;s plastic and urban pollution in some parts of the beaches, but you can certainly swim in the sea... The period you have chosen to travel is not yet the highest peak so it will be ok swiming everywhere...

And this country is very very interesting and different from what you%26#39;re used to randomly visit in Europe...

Have fun!

|||

Thank you very much, now we are not that worried any more ;-)

The link about the car rental looks very promising, we will check it out (since Europcar, Hertz and Sixt seem quite overpriced in Albania, right?!). Great help, thank you!!

|||

Yes it%26#39;s possible.

There are car rental kiosks in the airport immediately after you exit customs. Cars are very expensive (100 Euro per day or more)

Road conditions range from OK to %26quot;you got to be joking!%26quot; The biggest problem is lack of experience and concern for other by many Albanian drivers. Poorly maintained cars, drinking, and hot mediterranean blood makes for a lively drive. If you have driven in Naples, you can make it here but you do need to take care. Every day the road infrastructure gets better but there is still a long way to go before the Germans get jealous!

There is pollution in the sea, primarily around Durres in summer. Having said that, I have been in the sea there at all times of year and have had no problems (yet). At the more remote beaches, it is much better, particularly as you head south along the Ionian.

Good luck. If you have other questions, e-mail me at sksintirana@hotmail.com

private rooms in Tirana and Durres

Anyone knows someone, who rents out private rooms in these 2 cities, we usually prefer to stay in places with a charm and meeting with locals. So any recommendations are welcome!

|||

albaniantrip.com

Great places in the heart of the towns...

|||

We own and rent apartments in the Durres Beach. If interested let me know, so that I can tell you more about conditions and prices. And, as you can see, I speak and even write English :)

|||

now you can also find appartements for rent in Vlora on www.albaniantrip.com

Just be sure to book as soon as possible as July is already sold out...

Travelling from Skopje to Tirana

Hello! We (me %26amp; my boyfriend) want to travel from Bucharest to Skopje (via Sofia) with a couple of friends - by car -, and to spend some days there. As I am a true %26quot;travel bug%26quot; and due to the fact that I am dying to visit Albania - and especially Tirana -, I would really like to know whether or not there are trains departing from Skopje to Tirana, as I wouldn%26#39;t like to travel by bus. My friends won%26#39;t go with me - they say that it%26#39;s too dangerous to travel to Albania -, but I disagree. Can anyone help?

Thank you so much!

|||

Hello Botic,

There are no trains Skopje-Tirana, but only busses. Many leave late in the evening and in the morning you are in Tirana. Plan for some extra days on day tours (I would recommend Kruja and Durres), as you can see Tirana in one afternoon.

Tell your friends that it is as dangerous as anywhere else in the world! :)

Enjoy

|||

Thank you very much; I intend to visit Durres, also! I will tell my friends that! :)

|||

Oh tell your friends that travelling to Italy or France would probably result much more dangerous then Albania... Most probably... The only dangerous thing in Albania is traffic... For the rest you%26#39;re as safe as in Switzerland...

albaniantrip.com in case need more infos...

Best and have fun!

|||

Thank you for replying! Unfortunately, they are very stubborn! That%26#39;s why, I%26#39;ve decided to go there only with my boyfriend! I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll have tons of fun and see some spectacular sights! :)

|||

It is really safe to travel even by car. Me and my boyfriend went from Skopje to Durres, and down to Saranda in Albania by car - no problem at all. Police is careful not to harass foreign vehicles (I think it is in line with the country%26#39;s promotion as tourist destination), and people are friendly and helpful. Neither of us spoke Albanian, but whenever we stopped to ask for direction, they really tried hard to explain in English and Italian.

If you do take the bus after all, I would reccomend a Skopje - Ohrid route, sleep over and get some rest at Ohrid, and then continue on. The road is now in excellent condition, but it is tiresome to drive through mountains.

cheap flights from USA to Albania

Can any body help me with a website or travel agent who can get me a good fare on flight from Texas to Tirana, Albania? I%26#39;ve already tried the usual flight websites but the prices ranged around 1600 to 2200. Thanks for your help everyone

|||

Chances are you%26#39;re looking to travel at peak Season..but coming the distance sounds about right, unfortunately! Have you tried www.kayak.com? Flights out of NY area are all over 1K! Suggest posting in %26#39;Airlines%26#39; Forum here..there are some deals to be had on the other side of the Atlantic that may lower the cost! Enjoy!

|||

well you can get to new york first and then try the berlin air to get to vienna.u can get a round trip to vienna for less than 400euros if u book few weeks in advance, and then a ticket to Tirana from Vienna would cost you another 300!

|||

u can try belleair.it. it%26#39;s a low cost airline, and flies out of Italy-several destinations. You go to italy (I%26#39;m sure that you can find cheap flights there) and then take the plane to tirana.

|||

you can go to Korca via regular bus (there are minivans leaving every half an hour from the center of Tirana), and then get a bus from Korca to Thessaloniki (several busses every day that leave all day) Unfortunately I don%26#39;t know any websites with info, but if you will be with your Albanian friend there shouldn%26#39;t be any problems

how to arrive in Tirana from Bucharest

Hello to everybody,

I wish to know the cheapest way to arrive in Tirana from Bucharest.

Does anyone ever traveled from Bucharest to Tirana??

Any dangerous useing the personal car?

Not much connection between this cities. No direct flights.

Thanks for help,

|||

There are flights on gorillaair.com but the rates for next year (June) start at $455 US dollars- far more than I can afford. Aren%26#39;t there maxi-taxis or busses? When I was there this summer- my impression was that busses went all over Eastern Europe. Please let me know if you find an answer. I will post a similar request on other forums as I plan to return next summer and would also like to visit Albania (cheaply).

|||

I have in mind a budget of 100 - 150 euros by bus. Tirana is not so far from Bucharest. To pay 400 - 500 USD (euro) for a flight is too much. Anyway i`ll start to find out if there are any buses to Titana.

I know there are buses to Salonic - Greece. MAybe from there i can find a conection to Tirana.

|||

I have heard that you can take a train to Sofia, then take a bus to Skopje, Macedonia. From there you can take a mini-bus to Tirana, Albania. Now I just need details (ie which bus, cost, all the important details)http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i15556-Future_travel_plans_for_2008.html

|||

I found some answers on another forum so I%26#39;ll post the link here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ ShowTopic-g295110-i8579-k1948918-l12087422- Bus_travel_Skopje_to_Tirana-Skopje.html#. Take out the spaces in the web addresshttp://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i15556-Future_travel_plans_for_2009.html

|||

Re: Travelling from Bucharest to Tirana, I did it once, and it was very tiresome, but doable. From Skopie there are daily busses to Tirana or Durres during the high season, and the price is appx. 40 eur round trip. The busses leave from the main bus stop in Skopie, and arrive in the main square in Tirana.

As for using your own car, there are no problems whatsoever. Plus the police is very cautious in not attacking foreigner licence plates (country policy to attract tourists).

Montenegro and Albania in August

Hi,

Am thinking of heading to Montenegro and Albania for roughtly 10 days in August. However, have almost no clue on where to go/what to see in these two countries, and am open to any suggestions for itinerary, accommodations and restaurants. Many thanks in advance.

P.S. If it helps, I will be flying in from Brussels.

|||

What do you want to see and do? Albania has everything imaginable, but you can%26#39;t do it all in two weeks. You want history, beaches, remote mountain trekking, night life, what? August is peak tourist season here and the infrastructure is somewhat challenged by 1 million Kosovars and Macedonian albanians who come for the season. Still, it%26#39;s quite the interesting place. e-mail me at sksintirana@hotmail.com for more information.

Steve

|||

Check out with albaniantrip.com for accomodation... Quite busy in August but always worth a try....

Sarande Hotel Cakalli is it good, and does Albania have gas?

I would like to inform my self, do Alabanians have gas for filling my car and drive there, and the second question is, do you know, and recommend some cheap but good hotstel in Saranda?

|||

Da imaat plin

|||

i was just in Albania and i can tell you that there is no problems getting gas, there are lots of stations.

i didn%26#39;t go to the south so i don%26#39;t know anything about Sarande

|||

Gas is no problem. There is unleaded (benzine pa plumb) and diesel (nafte). Don%26#39;t get them confused!

There are lots of hotels in Saranda, but if you go in high season (July-August) everything gets more expensive.

We will be camping and I can not find any information on whether there are camping facilities in Albania.... can anyone help....

|||

I don%26#39;t know of any official campgrounds on Albanian beaches. There are lots of beaches where there is no development and you could just pitch a tent and noone would care. There would not be any services there though.

Sheraton Hotel, Tirana

Staying here on an upcoming tour. Looking for local inexpensive to moderately priced restaurants frequented by locals, not a tourist trap, within walking distance or a SHORT cab ride. Suggestions would be appreciated. Any other tips on things to see??

|||

The Stephen Centre is where my friend stayed-basic but very clean and in the very centre (not too close to Sheraton, though). The other close place is President Hotel or Iliria Hotel (both very nice, homey, moderately priced)(try to google them, as I don%26#39;t have their contacts.)

As for things to do, I would make sure to take the cable car to Mount Dajti-very spectacular! There are several concerts and shows, many very good, either for free or peanuts (it cost me 5 USD to see %26quot;The Barber of Sivillia%26quot;!)

Enjoy!

|||

Thank you GerdaS for the information

I am looking for restaurants. You mentioned The Stephen Centre,President Hotel or Iliria Hotel. Are there restaurants in the hotels you recommended.

|||

Hello elbw52,

u r right-I didn%26#39;t read your post carefully. As for restaurants near by, I prefer chocolat, and ambassador-very interesting vegetarian,and french cuisine. Juvenilia has a great location and literally 50 m away from sheraton...

|||

Thanks, the vegetarian sounds interesting.

|||

I think Juvenilia is good, also Princ Park is great dring the summer time, try bruscheta. In the block area there is one that you should not miss %26quot;Era%26quot; great Albanian food and cold Tirana bear. You will not regret.

Hope you have a fun here in Tirana

|||

Walk out the front door, turn in any direction, and you will be falling over restaurants before you have gone more than 500 meters. Go one block west of the main boulevard into the Blloku area and there are hundreds of places. La Tavernetta, Villa Ferdinandho, King House, Carlsberg, Serendipity, Primavera, %26quot;Kolonat%26quot;, Dafni (spelled with a triangle, not a D), Yamato (sushi), Ocean Blue.... OK, you get the idea. Lots of places to eat within walking distance of the Sheraton.

As for sights, walk straight down the main boulevard, over the river, into Skanderbeg Square, and around the square. You%26#39;ll see museums, statues, beggars, parks, terrible traffic, great ice cream stands, and lots of folk out for the evening stroll.

Albania urgent query

Hallo

A friend of mine is being posted to Albania to work (next week) and has only just found out the destination.

Bulquize. I can%26#39;t find it on any map. The only thing I have been able to find out is that it used to be called Kurtaj, but I can%26#39;t find that on any map either.

She%26#39;s flying into Tirana - is Bulquize/Kurtaj reasonably close by?

Many thanks. Hope someone answers today, Friday!

|||

Hey there, sorry it is Saturday. Bulquize is a small place near Peshkopia. Some 5-6 hours drive from Tirana I was told.

What is she going to do there??????? Good luck,

!

|||

Hallo, thanks for replying.

Oh dear. Bulqize (I%26#39;ve got the right spelling now) is indeed 132km by road from Tirana. That would be because of the mountains inbetween.

I%26#39;m now wondering where she%26#39;ll be staying.

What does she do? She%26#39;s an engineer.

Please write again with any ideas about where they put people up who are staying in that area.

Many thanks -

|||

Hello again, I hope the company will provide the apartment for her but if not I think it will not be too hard to find an accommodation. Unfortunately I have never been there so I cannot tell you exactly what to expect but Albanians are very hospitable people in general.

I myself am a foreigner and live here for over a year although in Tirana, this is a beautiful country and I would suggest that you buy a Bratd guide on Albania by Julianne Gloyer, it gives you a lot of good suggestions.

Oh gosh, not the best place in albania. Bulqize is a small town where they extract minerals (chrome). Few Albanians have been there. good thing is it%26#39;s high in the mountains so it%26#39;s good in summer altitude 1100m .

property for sale

over the years i have visited Croatia and more recently Montenegro, but none of these countries are as beautiful or as unspoiled as albania, and as i approach my retirement it is my dream to buy a small village house somewhere on the albanian riviera, ie himare/qeparo/vuno/dhermi etc, is there anybody out there who knows of such a property for sale or could give me any advice i would be forever in your debt kind regards lofgren

|||

try these websites: celesi.com; njoftime.com; lajmerime.com; telegazeta.info.

the posts are in Albanian, but you can put an ad under %26quot;buy%26quot; category %26quot;kerkoj te blej%26quot;, and people might respond. If you manage to go to Dhermi, there is a real estate agency handling properties, but unfortunately I don%26#39;t have their contacts.

Good luck

|||

I would recommend this website who seems to have a good selection of properties: www.albania-properties.co.uk and hopefully they will be able to find you something also. I did rent an apartment for two weeks in Saranda through them. Very friendly Albanian agent and speaking perfect English. Good luck, George

Tirana - Kotor

And another question..........

We need to get from Tirana to Kotor in Montenegro. I know we can do this by furgons/taxis etc but are there any scheduled buses or minivans making the journey or are there any travel agencies in Tirana or en-route to the border who offer transport right the way through to Kotor? We want to leave Tirana in the morning, we don%26#39;t mind how early.

Many Thanks.

|||

Hello again,

We%26#39;re also planning this route, but again the reverse. We are planning to go from Kotor to Ulcinj, bus to Skhodra, then mini bus to Tirana. Seems very doable from what I%26#39;ve seen on these boards and also from what I found on inyourpocket.com Shkodra.

If there are more %26quot;direct%26quot; transports that would be terrific.

Thanks,

|||

Not sure about travel agencies but it is easy to do in one day with the furgon, minibus and bus combo. Though it will definitely take a day of travel.

We took an early morning furgon (which leave all the time to Shkodra) and was incredibly quick. If you leave Tirana at about 6.30 am or 7am you will easily be up at Shkodra in time for the 9am minibus which leaves from the travel agent near the Hotel Rozafa. this is where the furgon seems to terminate anyway, but just check with the driver.

If you ask the driver (Mr Mahendra?) when booking your ticket, you should be able to get dropped off at the main bus staiton in Ulcinj by 11 am. From there you can get almost hourly buses down the coast in peak season (though not all go through to Kotor). There would be at least half a dozen a day that do. You should be in Kotor by about 4pm.

If you don%26#39;t make the 9am minibus, there is an afternoon minibus from Shkodra at 3pm.

Because of the border crossing and the poor roads, the minibus between Shkodra to Ulcinj can take some time - though in our case we had to stop to get the tyre changed as well and then drive back to get someone%26#39;s passport that we had left behind!!! So, the journey took about two hours instead of 1.

Good Luck

accomodation Southern Albania

Hi,

We are heading to Albania in June for a couple of weeks in the middle of a long trip. We are hoping to spend a bit of time just relaxing on a beach eating good food. Can anyone suggest a quiet nice place to stay (we are not really into a party atmosphere) that is on or near a beach in Southern Albania?

Thanks

|||

I recommend the tiny beach of Jala. It is about four hours south from the capital city, Tirana. In case you find it too small or too quiet, it is next to other beaches such as Himara, Dhermi and Gjipe (short for Bay of God - the name speaks for itself).

Jala is quiet and has a main hotel, a tiny camping site - very cheap as well as a small number of chalets, which are clean, air-conditioned and inexpensive - around $40 per room of three per night. It has a few restaurants and caffes. They have a rich and excuisite menu that include numerous fresh fish dishes, vegetarian stews, various meat dishes and lots and lots of salads.

It is an experience like no other and you are right to want to visit now, before the tourist invasion, which is sure to come.

|||

Thanks very much for that information, it sounds great. You don%26#39;t by any chance have the name of the hotel and the bungalows in the area?

Jessica

|||

I am going to southern Albania in Sep 2006. Have you been able to find any good accomodation? I%26#39;d like to stay in a villa, with my family - 6 people.

|||

No joy as yet with places to stay, am going to get the new edition of the Bradt guide to Albania, which should help.

|||

Mountain hiking in Albania- The Accursed Mountains

Anyone out there have experience of hiking in the Albanian Mountains ?

I read Robert Carvers book %26quot; The Accursed Mountains%26quot;, but can find little about hiking in Albania.

|||

hello,

you might check website balkan peace park project. i hope this could help.

|||

That depends on what part of the country you want to hike in. Of course the northern Alps are the most dramatic. I have been in the area and done some day-hiking. Drop me a line at sksintirana@hotmail.com and we can discuss exactly what it is you want to do.

a 2008 trip to Albania - in the works

Hi -

We%26#39;ll be wrapping up a three week organized tour of Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro around the 12th of July, 2008.

A few in the group would like to explore Albania from there.

Any recommended itinerary suggested for a five or six day trip?

Is there a way to get a train in from the north, I believe our group trip ends just north of the border.

We%26#39;ll fly out of Tirana at the end of our stay.

Thanks much !

|||

Hi DowntownMinnepolis,

Fantastic that you are traveling through this region, its really beautiful! I spent a year in Bosnia and on one occasion I took a road trip through Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia and it was fantastic. i found Albania really interesting and it almost might be worth renting a car and exploring Albania this way, although you might have insurance problems with going into Albania since the potholes are worse than in MN (I%26#39;m originally from Northern MN). i dont know if you%26#39;re interested but Bosnia but it is also really beautiful and easily accessible via bus. I know that in Croatia there isn%26#39;t a good rail transport system down the coast as well as in Bosnia which only has a few train routes available but the bus system is amazing and I%26#39;m suspecting that it might be similar in Albania! Hope this is helpful!

|||

Hey there, very happy that you will be travelling to this region. I have just finished a two weeks vacation throughout Albania and I would suggest to visit Berat, Dhermi, Gjirokastra and Saranda.

This is how I would spend six days. You should take the bus from Ulcinj, Montenegro and go to Shcodra, visit Rosafa Castle, then take a bus to Kruja and visit Kruja market and a castle and then go to Tirana, spend a night in Tirana or in Durres. The next day go and visit Berat and stay there, there is a very nice small hotel there in the middle of the town where you could spend a night. The next day go to Dhermi via Vlora. It is a beautiful and almost empty beach. If you like swiming and clear sea you will find it there. From there to Saranda, we sleapt in Ksamili a small village on the way to Butrinti (old Roman site, must see) with beautiful beaches. From Saranda it is one hour drive to Gjirokastra, the birth town of Enver Hoxa and Ismail Kadare, very beautifu old city. When there you should stay in Hotel Kalemi, old house with nice views on Gjirokastra.

If you stay couple more days I would strongly recomend you go to Thethi from Shcodra, the little village only 70 km from Shkodra but good three hours drive since the road is in a very bad condition. However, once there you will forget about anyting else. If you like hiking, breathtaking views of the mountains, excellent organic home made food, this is the place to be.

Should you need information about hotels and restaurants in all those places just let me know.

|||

HELLO THERE.

The best place to see in albania is Tirana. You can travel by bus which is the best and most affordable way from Montenegro.

Once in Tirana, I guarantee that you%26#39;ll have the best time of your life. Another place to see is Kruja. Its near Tirana nad it also can be reached by bus. Then you can visit Durres where you can enjoy some wondeful time by the Adriatic sea and its important to mention the night life there.

In Tirana i also recommend a trip in the mountain of Dajti. You can reach the bottom of it by taking a cab and then take the trolly all the way up to the top of it. There i would recommend this wonderful restaurant that I was this year. Its called %26quot; GURRA E PERRISE%26quot;.

when you reach at the top of the mountain you%26#39;ll see a bunch of minivans. Aproach them and ask for the restaurant above mentioned. This restaurant offers free transportation for its clients. It will be a memorable experience. all the best and enjoy Albania.

Everyone there is friendly and willing to help.

Family of 4 interested in Touring Albania for a week

We are thinking about visiting in March or February and would like any suggestions about spedning a week in Albania.

Two adults and two young teens.

|||

Tirana

We spent 3 full days in Albania and had a good time.

Two adults and an 8 year old.

We visited Tirana, Kruja and Durres by bus.

People were always friendly to us and the food was very good.

Locals are always happy to see foreigners actually coming to their

country for a vacation. Lots of USA flags up everywhere since

the Bush visit.

MURILLO - Los Angeles CA

We ran into other Californias on our visit there.

|||

Thank you for responding, we find so little about Albania Tourism in our usual places to look. Do you have any reccomendations regarding accomodations?

Mary

|||

We stayed at the Sheraton in Tirana. It is supposedly the only five-star in the city and it was a very nice hotel with friendly staff.

|||

Hello,

I believe you are arriving here by plane so you will lend near Tirana.

Day one, Tirana, you could stay in Sharaton but you could also have a nice, cheaper, smaller hotels, it is up to you.

Day 2, visit Kruja, taxi is not too expensive, the price should be arranged in advance. Kruja is a very nice small town, with a very nice old market and few historical monuments. Back to Tirana or Durres.

Day 3, going to Durres for a lunch in a nice Piazza restaurant for fish. Coninue trip to Berat. Berat is a beautiful city with a nice fortress. Sleap in Berat in a small hotel Mangalemi, a bit run down very cheap and cold but very good food.

Day 4, go to Gjirokaster, beautiful town close to the Greek border. You could stay in Kalemi hotel, very rustic and clean but cold and no generator during the power cuts.

Day 5, go to Saranda, it is only one hour and half from Gjirokaster. Visit Butrinti, half hour away. While in Saranda stay in a very nice five star hotel Butrinti. Eat good fish in a reastorant called Agimi.

Day 6, go back to Tirana.

I am sure you will have a great time, the country is very beautiful and very nice and hospitable people and they love Amerikans.

Should you need any other information please let me know.

|||

I%26#39;m an American expat living in Tirana. I highly reccomend coming here. Depending on what your interests are, Albania presents many possibilities. Drop me a line at sksintirana@hotmail.com and I%26#39;d be glad to provide advice and suggestions.

Steve

|||

Hello all:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Albania is still a twinkle in our eye, but if we don%26#39;t make it this year we are hoping for the next

This info is vital to our trip, we have only found one book about Albania travel that is at all contemporaray.

Best,

|||

You can definitly find more information on the website of Albania-holidays.com. This agency has experience in organising trips for the period of your choice, as well according to your budget.

Myself, Iam working here in Tirana for quiet some time, and I can recommend strongly to come over and visit this country. It is beautifull, the hospitality of the people, the food, landscapes, still unspoiled, however the progress is made in comparison with a few years ago.

An other advise I can give is when you are planning to stay for some time in Tirana, to rent an appartment, you have all facilites,2 bed-and bathroom for only 40€/night. Plan your stay in Blocku arrea so all the cosy and cheap restaurants are nearby.

You will enjoy your stay, for sure !!

If you need more info, you can contact me on

Flying into Tirana, traveling down to Greece- need advice

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Albania this summer. My ideal plan is to visit Vlore for a few days and then work my way down to the Greek Islands, perhaps Crete for a few days. What is the best route for transportation- driving, ferry, train, bus, flying...etc?? I would love to ferry down to Greece and then rent a scooter to tour the islands, does anyone know how practical this would be (how long would the ferry ride be and is there even a route?) Is there a train system in Albania that would take me there more quickly and directly? Any advice is appreciated!

|||

There are daily ferries and hydrofoils from Saranda to Corfu in the summer. Vlore has furgons that go to Saranda, so going to Greece via boat isn%26#39;t very difficult.

Trains in Albania are very limited. They%26#39;re also exasperatingly slow and decrepit....springs popping up from the seats, broken windows, smelly from cigarette smoke. They%26#39;re dirt cheap and even Albanians avoid taking them! No trains go to Saranda or southern Albania anyways so bus and furgon is the way to go.

backpackers in Albania

Hi everybody!

we are going to travel to Albania during the summer by plane. My difficult question is that how we can travel from one town to another one? I have heard that the timetables of buses are rapsodic and when you travel in the morning you can spend just 2-3 hours at the destination because the bus returns. What about taxis? We are 4. Can we hire a taxi for a day? Like in Aqaba (Jordan)?

Thanks for the answer

|||

Yes, you can hire a taxi or a van (easier and cheaper) for one day, including the driver. Just make sure to negotiate the price beforehand.

|||

There is no problem traveling in the morning. Just ask around for autobus or furgon in the direction you want to go. People are kind and always want to help.

Taxis is no problem and useful for destinations where public transport doesn%26#39;t go. But first try bus of furgon.\

Greetings,

Giovanni

|||

Hiring a taxi for a day isn%26#39;t that difficult, just negotiate a price beforehand and include waiting time for the cabbie.

Catching a furgon in Tirana can be hard because furgon %26quot;stops%26quot; move around frequently due to roadwork and construction, ex. one %26quot;stop%26quot; was a mud patch next to a dilapidated concrete building.

Cab drivers are up to date about the latest furgon departure points -- some of the ones mapped out in the latest Lonely Planet book are outdated by now; for instance, south-bound furgons now leave from a parking lot in the outskirts of town -- so I hopped in a cab and asked for the furgon to my destination. Cab fares within Tirana are only 500 lek, so it%26#39;s not much and it saves you the hassle of trying to figure out stops on your own.

what documents do u need to travel to Albanian

for those not having their green card yet- can you travel with a valid albanian pasposrt, employment authorizatio card, and a Travel Pass? Are they enough to visit and return to US?

|||

If what you mean by travel pass is a %26quot;Travel Permitt%26quot; or technically an advance parole, then that%26#39;s all you need. However, if you are not sure that that is what you have, I would not leave USA until you make sure that you have a Travel Permit before leaving. IF you leave without one, not only do you risk to not be able to return, but all your filing process with INS will be cancelled, and when you do come back you will have to start the process all over again. If I were you, I would check first by calling INS and asking them.

|||

Hi we travel to albania twice a year from England. All you need is your passport and a travel visa which we normally get from the port in Corfu before we board the ferry, costs about 20 euro.

What currency is acceptable in Tirana eg stirling, dollars

Are there plenty of exchange bureaux, banks, money changers in hotels?

Coming from London .. best advice please?

ATM? Cash? Local currency?

Thanks

|||

there are planty of bureaux in the city i dont know about hotels there are planty of ATMs as long as u have a bank card , and when u use the card it will give u a choice of euros or albanian lek and a choice of language, have a nice holiday

|||

thanks, I%26#39;ll use ATMs then

|||

Make sure you exchange your lek before you leave Albania, as you can%26#39;t do that once you%26#39;re outside the country.

|||

- many exchange offices: not always the best rates though

- advise:

Use ATM machines with your VISA card (it gives the cheapest withdrawal cost afterwards. ATMs are everywhere, the Raiffeissen ATM can allow you also to withdrawal Euros, which you can use to pay rental cars, apartments, and this will end up in your own profit

-if you bring cash, you will find close to central bank square many people who would like to exchange your dollars for AlbLEK, it is advisable only to do this together with a local guy who you can trust, otherwise you will be overwelmed by the whole group of traders

-local currency is albanian LEK, the big banknotes are exchangable back in Europe, for at least on amount worth 50€.

Hope this helps you out a bit

Cheers

|||

Last time i been there they had people on the street exchanging ... becareful because that kind of exchange could lend you some counterfit cash.

Best bet would be Bank ...

Travel from Athens to Croatia

I want to travel form Athens to Croatia. Is there a train service for this. Or a bus?

If i were to fly, where would i go from and to and what airline?

Thanks heaps for your help.

From down under.

|||

Did you find a way?

I have the same challenge. If so let me know please.

Thanks

Michael

Canberra Australia

|||

Hi - is there anyone that can help with this? I%26#39;m trying to do it too...

Thanks, from Down Under!

|||

Hi, I also need some help on this topic. I cant find any tours from Athens to Croatia! Please let me know if you have done this before and whatyou did. Thanks

|||

I haven%26#39;t made the trip yet, but i will be travelling in the general direction in july.

We kick off in the greek islands and are heading onto Bitola, Macedonia to visit my girlfriends family.

To do get there we are catching a train from athens to thessaloniki, change trains and go to florina just south of the border. From there we are catching a taxi to bitola (girlfriends family arranging this, but shouldn%26#39;t be hard to arrange). After some time in bitola we head west to tirana via ohrid. There are only buses along this route - but you could try a cab for part of it- apparently they are very cheap.

From tirana there are buses the rest of the way. through montenegro and onto dubrovnik.all of the bus timetables aren%26#39;t exactly set in stone, but there are several each day.

that%26#39;s our plan, havent done it yet so can%26#39;t comment on the success. will let you know in august.

|||

Ohh ok thanks, gives me some info anyways. Yeah we%26#39;ll be doing it October, but yeah I%26#39;ll check back here to see what you did. Thanks!

Weather

Does anyone know what the weather is like in the Durres area mid may time ? Thanks :o)

|||

Hey AJP, it should be nice, maybe between 25 and 30 C. Here the climate is very mild although this year the spring is very rainy.

Best,

- 27th-thessaloniki- Troy ruins

- 28th-29 Tory ruins Istanbul

Then we will stay in Istanbul until the 4th may, and we will fly back to Tirana.

If you have any suggestions or info about this trip, please share them with me - it will be really helpful!! I have difficulties especially in finding out infos on:

- how to go from Orhid to Thessaloniki

- when is the bus from Thessaloniki - Kesan/Istanbul

Thanks a lot and I hope yuo had a nice trip

Elisa

|||

We will get a bus from Tirana to Thessaloniki, then get into the Dostluk Filia night train to Instanbul.

The return trip will be the same.

First time visitor to Triana

Hiya

Me %26amp; my wife are planning to visit Triana, and was wondering like in other capital cities do they have an old town? Would love to see the real history of the town, and visit some of the old buildings. My Albanian isn%26#39;t that good, so I would love to known the name of this area before I visit, can anyone help?

|||

The old town portion of Tirana is not all that old and much of it was destroyed in the Battle for Tirana in WWII. There are some interesting buildings and a few old house remaining, but the growth here has been so rapid that much is being lost.

E-mail me if you have specific questions at sksintirana@hotmail.com

cheapest but also safe way to get from albania to montenegro

any suggestions?

thanks in advance!

|||

It depends where in each country you are travelling from and to.

You can use the extensive network of very cheap furgons to get to Shkodra (on the Albanian side of the border) and then take one of the two minibuses that go to Ulcinj in Montenegro from there. I think the first leaves at 9am and there is also one in the afternoon at aobut 3pm (but you should check). The minibuses leave from the travel agent near the Hotel Rozafa in Shkodra.

If you ask the driver when booking your ticket on the minibus, you should be able to get dropped off at the main bus staiton in Ulcinj. From there you can get almost hourly and very reasonably priced buses down the Montenegrin coast in peak season. The minibus from Shkodra to Ulcinj takes between an hour and up to two hours depending upon the border crossing.

Can anybody tell me of a really nice quality restaurant in Tirana where my daughter and her soon to be husband can hold their wedding reception? Urgent response appreciated as previous plans fallen through and the date is set for Sun 18th Feb. Apparently it is customary for receptions to be held in restaurants but the problem is they don%26#39;t seem to have websites. Any help gratefully received but please make it as soon as possible. Thank you

Is Albania a safe place to visit?

Hi,

I am Canadian and am Jewish. Is Albania a safe place for me to visit?

|||

From what I%26#39;ve read and heard NO!

|||

Hi Surfkay,

Thank you for responding to my post - I really appreciate it. Do you recall the sources that you read? If so, please indicate. Also, if possible, please elaborate on what makes the area unsafe for me to visit. My girlfriend really wants me to meet her parents, so this decision is complex. Again, I really appreciate any information you can provide.

|||

Albania is just fine, been there several times. No major issues in the main cities (Tirana, Durres, Vlore), petty crime involving pick pocketing if travelling on a bus. Avoid north Albania areas starting from Kukes and Tropoje. A moderate travel risk, nothing to keep you awake at night. Enjoy Tirana at night, lots of clubs. You will see by yourself, in the capital you will see women/girls (not prostitutes) at midnight and early hours of the morning club hopping.

|||

There was only one country in Europe during WWII that did not surrender a single citizen of Jewish descent to the Nazis, that was Albania. You are more than safe.

|||

Albania is pretty chill but stay in the main cities. I don%26#39;t think i have ever heard of any antisemitic violence there so if anything were to happen to you, you%26#39;d be the first one - a pioneer. Don%26#39;t try to pick up any girls because they might be out with friends or family and in that case you might be in trouble because albanians are very protective of their women.

|||

Ok I can understand you are concerned about this trip.

Check out the British foreign office website, advice for travellers.

Albania still has warnings , however it looks like it%26#39;s improved over the last few years. There is no mention of anti semitism.

Good luck.

|||

Thankyou everyone for your information. I will let you know how my trip goes.Thankyou again

|||

I spent 10 days in Albania (2 - 11 Sep 20060), staying in Tirana, Vlore and Saranda. I stayed with my son and his daughter who are volunteer Bible teachers. Albanians have a tolerant attitude to all religions. 70% of them are Muslim. I felt safe in Tirane in spite of its crazy traffic - the pedestrians are worse than the drivers - no one looks where they%26#39;re going - they just go! The pipping of horns is not a reflection of anger, it%26#39;s just to let you know they%26#39;re coming and to warn you to give way. Tirane has a lot of uncollected rubbish and loads of new building, so everywhere%26#39;s a mess. The further south in Albania you go, the cleaner it gets. Saranda is beautiful, especially Ksamil. but, again, loads of new building (most without permissions).

My daughter in law prepared all our food. Local fruit and veg is wonderful - tastier than anything I%26#39;ve ever had. But it has to be thoroughly washed and peeled before consumption.

You will not believe the airport - ultra-modern here and there and ancient at the same time. I saw a very old horse and cart overtake an air-conditioned bus!

Enjoy yourself!

|||

Albania is safe,and it worths a visit,this country has lovely nature and last year it has achieved great changements.......just take the reasonable protection

|||

hi ticycle . it%26#39;s not more safe then east los angeles so if you go in la don%26#39;t go to east if you want to stay aut of problems so the same thing in albania .if you go in albania you have to go tirana durresi shkodra gjirokaster botrint apollonia saranda e himara don%26#39;t on the mountains alone but in the cities you can do every thing you want you can stay latte you can be drank so it%26#39;s a nice place

Albanian wedding

My fiancee is from Albania and in October we will be going there to get married. He left me in charge of everything even though I have never been there lol. Any suggestions on hotels, restaurants, activities. We are staying in Tirana and visiting his family in Lach for a couple of days. I also really want to go to Durres. How is Elbasan, Gjrokaster and Saranda? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks : )

|||

Congratulations for a)marrying an Albanian and b)going there!! I am marreid to an albanian and his family should be arranging the wedding so what is he playing at!! If you have never been there then I would advise not going at all and if possible going somewhere else for the Honeymoon!! It is very poor, run down and quite depressing, especially to see so much poverty. You will always be the outsider too so be prepared for that. Kosova is much more advanced I thought becasue of the Serbian influence. I hope you are sure you%26#39;re doing the right thing and Good Luck!!

|||

Hi there. I assure you that you will have a good time in Tirana. Im not sure about Lac, but trust me Im albanian myself and its true that Albania is not USA, but its a country full of wonderful people. Its a country still in development. The people are nice, loving and caring. The other person before me wrote that its a poor country but lets not forget even New York has its ghettos. You%26#39;ll find wonderfull things in all the cities you will visit. The wedding will be an experience as well. Its a little different from what we do in USA, but i hope you leaned how to dance albanian. lol.

I wish you the best and a long happy life with your albanian guy.

By the way I am marrying an italian guy and i cant wait to take him there. and remember its doesnt matter where one is from a poor or a rich country. What matters is the person and the love you share with him.

enjoy albania and have fun.

|||

Hello there and congratulations on your wedding.

I agree Albania is a poor country but has very friendly and hospitable poeple and this is what it matters. I have never been in Lac, I passed by few times so cannot tell you much but Durres is really nice place, the center and while there go to Piaca restaurant, the greatest fish restaurant. I would recomend you go to Gjirokastra, Berat and Sarand to visit Butrinti.

I spent this summer three weeks of my vacation in Albania with couple of my friends and we really enjoyed it. I have been working in

Tirana for the last year and I really like it. As everywhere there are good and bad things, at the moment we have power cuts, but nothing is perfect.

I am sure you will enjoy Albania, all the best.
