I am spending seven days in Albania and Macedonia in May, travelling from Tirana to Skopje. Am planning on a couple of days in Tirana, before hitting the road to Lake Ohrid, where I will be based for a couple more days and then making my way up to Skopje, possibly via the Mavrovo National Park for a day or two.
What would you recommend as the best sights/things to do in that timeframe? Any good hostels/hotels/restaurants/bars to stop off at along the way.
Also, what is the best form of transport, when does it run and how far/long does it take to get between these places?

Hi Megan,
In Tirana you can stay in Broadway hotel, near stadium Dinamo, it is nice and clean hotel 70 Euro per night.
I would recommend you visit Kruja, this is a small town in the mountains with lots of history and very old shopping street with attractive souvenirs from Albania. Also in Tirana there is a very interesting museum in the Skednerbeg square which you should visit.
AS for restaurants in Tirana the choice is wide and you will not make mistake going to eat traditional food in any of the restaurants in the block area. I would highly recommend King%26#39;s House, Juvenilija, Era.
On the way to Ohrid you should stop to Gjahtari (Hunter) restaurant famous for wild animals food.
I think the best way of transport here are vans (fourgones) that are going regularly from Tirana to other cities in Albania.
Hope this is helpful and you will have a great time,

In Tirana, I suggest you make sure you have an idea of what your priorities are for the short time you are here. Are you an ancient history buff? Then you need to go see the National Museum in Skanderbeg Square which has a very good exhibit on Illyrian artifacts. If you%26#39;re an Ottoman Empire fan, check out the Mosque of Ethem Bey (also on the square), some of the older houses in the area just east of the square still have the architectural flavor of the Late Ottoman period. If you are a fan of communism (and its much deserved decline) the city is full of relics of that time. Hoxha%26#39;s villa, the socialist/realist wing of the gallery of art, the Martyrs cemetery, the pyramid, etcetera. The Opera is good, and cheap, if that%26#39;s your cup of tea. A ride up the Dajti Express cable car gives great views of the city and is a good way to cool off if you are here in the middle of summer. A few nice restaurants up there too.
If your style is bars, cafe%26#39;s, and posing, head for the Bllok area, find a locale that suits you and spend your days people watching (and being watched). Club rat? Check out the Sharm Club near the Sheraton, Take Five in the Bllok area, or any of the clubs who staple their posters on trees all around the city. There%26#39;s always something going on, especially in summer. The backpackers hostel on Rruga Elbasan is centrally located, well equipped, architecturally interesting, and cheap. Find them at www.tiranahostel.com.
After you leave Tirana (travelling by bus, cab, or furgon to Qafe Thane) you%26#39;l pass over Qafe Krrabe which is the ride of a lifetime. Elbasan is interesting in a Turkish/communist-environmental-disaster kind of way.
After you cross in to Macedonia, spend some time in Ohrid or Struga. Beautiful lakeside towns with gorgeous views. Ohrid has more attractions than Sruga.
Finally, for me, Skopje has little to offer other than an international airport.
Enjoy!
