I have never been to Burrel ,but after spending 2 and a half weeks in Albania from the far south to the northern tip I feel I can safely say you are probably be safer there than in many western metropolitan areas. It is not a tourist spot ( I am guessing your going is concern in some way with the mining industry) and so the number of other non Albanians will be small. It is about an hour and a half -two to Tirana. We found the people to be outstandingly warm and welcoming . The children eager to practice any English they have.

Not only safe but worm and welcoming as well. Beautiful mountain road to Burrel. Do not expect it to be very touristic though. It is a miner town quite underdeveloped but if you know locals there ask them to show you some nature and on the way to there do not miss visiting Kruja or Tirana...
Have a great time in Albania

Burrel is safe but extremely rural. A very poor region of the nation and the location of a prison and former internment camp. There is a lot of mining activity in the region so things are starting to improve a little. You should have no problems since the people with the least to offer are often the most generous and welcoming. Good luck!
