a 2008 trip to Albania - in the works

Hi -

We%26#39;ll be wrapping up a three week organized tour of Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro around the 12th of July, 2008.

A few in the group would like to explore Albania from there.

Any recommended itinerary suggested for a five or six day trip?

Is there a way to get a train in from the north, I believe our group trip ends just north of the border.

We%26#39;ll fly out of Tirana at the end of our stay.

Thanks much !

Hi DowntownMinnepolis,

Fantastic that you are traveling through this region, its really beautiful! I spent a year in Bosnia and on one occasion I took a road trip through Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia and it was fantastic. i found Albania really interesting and it almost might be worth renting a car and exploring Albania this way, although you might have insurance problems with going into Albania since the potholes are worse than in MN (I%26#39;m originally from Northern MN). i dont know if you%26#39;re interested but Bosnia but it is also really beautiful and easily accessible via bus. I know that in Croatia there isn%26#39;t a good rail transport system down the coast as well as in Bosnia which only has a few train routes available but the bus system is amazing and I%26#39;m suspecting that it might be similar in Albania! Hope this is helpful!

Hey there, very happy that you will be travelling to this region. I have just finished a two weeks vacation throughout Albania and I would suggest to visit Berat, Dhermi, Gjirokastra and Saranda.

This is how I would spend six days. You should take the bus from Ulcinj, Montenegro and go to Shcodra, visit Rosafa Castle, then take a bus to Kruja and visit Kruja market and a castle and then go to Tirana, spend a night in Tirana or in Durres. The next day go and visit Berat and stay there, there is a very nice small hotel there in the middle of the town where you could spend a night. The next day go to Dhermi via Vlora. It is a beautiful and almost empty beach. If you like swiming and clear sea you will find it there. From there to Saranda, we sleapt in Ksamili a small village on the way to Butrinti (old Roman site, must see) with beautiful beaches. From Saranda it is one hour drive to Gjirokastra, the birth town of Enver Hoxa and Ismail Kadare, very beautifu old city. When there you should stay in Hotel Kalemi, old house with nice views on Gjirokastra.

If you stay couple more days I would strongly recomend you go to Thethi from Shcodra, the little village only 70 km from Shkodra but good three hours drive since the road is in a very bad condition. However, once there you will forget about anyting else. If you like hiking, breathtaking views of the mountains, excellent organic home made food, this is the place to be.

Should you need information about hotels and restaurants in all those places just let me know.

HELLO THERE.

The best place to see in albania is Tirana. You can travel by bus which is the best and most affordable way from Montenegro.

Once in Tirana, I guarantee that you%26#39;ll have the best time of your life. Another place to see is Kruja. Its near Tirana nad it also can be reached by bus. Then you can visit Durres where you can enjoy some wondeful time by the Adriatic sea and its important to mention the night life there.

In Tirana i also recommend a trip in the mountain of Dajti. You can reach the bottom of it by taking a cab and then take the trolly all the way up to the top of it. There i would recommend this wonderful restaurant that I was this year. Its called %26quot; GURRA E PERRISE%26quot;.

when you reach at the top of the mountain you%26#39;ll see a bunch of minivans. Aproach them and ask for the restaurant above mentioned. This restaurant offers free transportation for its clients. It will be a memorable experience. all the best and enjoy Albania.

Everyone there is friendly and willing to help.
